DIY: Space inspired DIY

The whole galaxy hipster craze kinda passed right by me. I saw the galaxy leggings and dresses on tumblr and Hot Topic and thought they were cool but I never got around to actually wearing them myself. However, I do love anything inspired by space! The night sky and the planets are so beautiful and complex how could we not be inspired by it?

So, I have chosen two DIY projects to feature that I really liked that were space/galaxy inspired.

The first one comes from Oh the lovely things:

DIY Galaxy Necklace-

You will need:
  • Triangle (or round, or any shape you fancy) charms. I used brass ones, similar to these.
  • Chain necklace (or chain, jump ring, and clasp to assemble- see an easy tutorial here).
  • Nail polish or acrylic paint
    • A dark color (I used navy blue)
    • A light color (I used white)
    • Two or more other colors (I used hot pink and lilac)
    • Glitter nail polish
    • Clear top coat nail polish or acrylic varnish
  • Cosmetic sponge

first, apply a generous coat of navy blue polish and let it dry completely.

start with the hot pink polish.  dab a small amount of polish on the corner of the sponge.

randomly sponge the polish onto the charm.

continue sponging the polish onto the charm- a dab here, a dab there, with lilac, then white, then navy blue (the color you used as a base) until you are happy with the result. then let it dry completely (it should take about 5 minutes).

apply a layer of glitter polish and let it dry completely. then add a layer of top coat, before applying a clear acrylic varnish to make sure it would last longer than a typical manicure.

DIY Star Hair Pins

THis DIY came from Hello Whimsy Blog

SUPPLIES: These can be bought at Michael's and AC More
MICHAELS: jewels, wire ( 20 gauge) and gold spray paint
AC MOORE: buttons and barrettes

Now you are ready to start!

Snip a long piece of wire and slide it through the button holes. Take your pliers and twist the two sides together tightly.

AN EXPLANATION:

1 and 2. I made a loop.
3. I added a second star.
4. I added a fourth star and more loops.

SO basically, using the one piece of wire, you will be making loops.

When the wire runs out, tuck it into the back of one of the button stars.

Set it aside.

Snip another long piece of wire. Slip it through the holes at either end of the hair barrette.

Now take your piece from earlier and fit it on top of your barrette.

What we have to do now is secure the piece to the barrette.

Wrap it around the stars, wire, barrette, wrap it and secure it.

Use the wire to make even more loops and 'falling stars'.

This is your skeleton.

Add glue to your loops.

Stick on your stars! Let it dry.

Now you are ready to paint!!!

Let them dry and then you are finished!
